Soldenfeldts Stiftelse, Heritage apartment building near Sortedam Lake in Østerbro, Copenhagen, Denmark
Soldenfelts Stiftelse is a red brick residential building arranged in four wings around an inner courtyard, with a prominent balcony above its central gateway facing Sortedam Dosseringssoe. The structure houses 99 apartments of different sizes, each equipped with a private kitchen and bathroom following a 2002 renovation.
Brothers Joseph and Friedrich Wilhelm Soldenfeldt founded this facility in 1894 to provide housing for older women including teachers, housekeepers, seamstresses, and domestic workers. The building was created as an endowment to support vulnerable women in their later years.
The facade displays twelve terracotta medallions showing virtues such as temperance, diligence, patience, innocence, humility, faith, hope, charity, peace, vigilance, prudence, and truth. These symbols reflect the moral ideals that shape the building's character as visitors approach it.
The building sits directly next to Sortedam Dosseringssoe with greenery surrounding it, making it a quiet setting within the city. Its location in Oesterbro offers good pedestrian and cycling connections to other neighborhoods and local amenities.
Inside the building is a banquet hall decorated with wall paintings by Danish artist Frans Schwartz, enriching the space with artistic vision. Additionally, a fourth-floor library, studio, and exercise room show that the original vision extended beyond mere shelter.
