Pedersborg Vandtårn, Water tower near E20 highway in Sorø, Denmark
Pedersborg Vandtårn is a water storage tower in Sorø near the E20 highway, built from reinforced concrete and rising approximately 15 meters tall. The structure holds about 1,000 cubic meters of water that supplies the surrounding region.
The tower was built in 1974 as a key development in regional water infrastructure for the Sorø area. From its inception, the project integrated artistic design alongside engineering function rather than treating decoration as an afterthought.
Artist Per Arnoldi covered the exterior with large-scale geometric patterns in red, blue, and yellow that turn the functional structure into a visual landmark. This blend of art and utility shows how everyday infrastructure can become part of the visual culture of a place.
The tower is easily accessed from Rustkammervej or Lervej in Sorø with parking available in the adjacent green area. You can walk around the site and view it clearly from the road without requiring special arrangements or permits.
The artwork adorning the tower was created by artist Per Arnoldi specifically with visibility for thousands of daily highway travelers in mind. The colorful geometric design transforms what could have been an ordinary gray structure into a deliberately crafted roadside landmark.
