Sorø Art Museum, Art museum in Sorø, Denmark
Sorø Art Museum is an art museum in the Danish town of Sorø that combines a neoclassical original building with a modern extension clad in ceramic shingles. The building stretches along the main street of the market town and houses exhibition spaces, a lecture hall, a café, and a museum shop.
The building was constructed between 1832 and 1834 as a residence for administrators of Sorø Academy. A major renovation in 2011 transformed the structure into the current museum and expanded it significantly.
The collection shows Danish art that reflects different artistic directions from national creators across multiple generations. Visitors see works that trace the country's artistic path through time.
The museum is easily accessed from Sorø's main street and sits within a walkable town center with nearby parking. The spaces are spread across multiple levels, so visitors should allow time to move comfortably through the entire building.
The museum holds a notable collection of roughly 190 Russian icons from 1500 to 1900, an unexpected cultural focus for the space. This collection is complemented by more than 100 Russian paintings from the late 1800s and early 1900s.
