Dokk1, Cultural center and library in Aarhus, Denmark.
Dokk1 is a public building on the waterfront in Aarhus, Denmark, combining a library, a media collection, and an event space under one roof. The structure has a polygonal concrete and glass form that rises over several floors and sits directly along the harbor promenade.
The building was commissioned after a design competition held in 2009 and opened in 2015. It replaced older city facilities and was built as part of a wider plan to transform the former harbor into a new urban district.
The name Dokk1 comes from the Danish word for dock, reflecting its location on a former port area of the city. Visitors can watch families, students, and older residents using the space at the same time, each in their own way.
The building sits on the waterfront and is easy to reach on foot from the city center, with generous bicycle parking nearby. It is worth visiting several floors, as the spaces are laid out differently and serve different purposes.
Inside the building hangs what is considered the world's largest tubular bell carillon, a musical instrument made of metal tubes that produces sounds at various moments during the day. Unlike a traditional carillon mounted on a tower, this one is suspended inside the building itself, making it part of the interior experience.
