Byens Bro, Modern footbridge and bicycle bridge in Odense, Denmark.
Byens Bro is a pedestrian and bicycle bridge in Odense that spans 135 meters across 15 railway tracks at the train station with separate pathways for each user type. The structure features a steel and concrete design supported by a distinctive steel pylon, and includes stairs and lifts for access to three railway platforms.
The bridge grew out of a design competition that the architecture firm Gottlieb Paludan won in 2012. It was completed in 2015 and has since linked the city center with harbor areas.
The name of this bridge was chosen through a public competition that involved more than 1300 local residents voting. This kind of community participation shows how the city values citizen input when building new public structures.
The bridge links Østre Stationsvej to Kottesgade and offers multiple ways to cross the railway through stairs and lifts. On both ends, cyclists will find substantial bicycle parking with spaces for around 1400 bikes.
The bridge design created two public squares at each end that serve as meeting points and rest areas. A 30-meter tall steel pylon with a mirror-like surface is visible from many parts of the city and has become a defining feature of the area.
