Denmark Expedition Memorial, Memorial stone at Langelinie, Denmark.
The memorial at Langelinie features three carved figures in granite showing men pushing a dog sledge, depicting the expedition members' journey across the Arctic. The stone is several meters across and stands as a commanding presence along the waterfront promenade.
The memorial honors three Danish explorers who died in 1907 during a mapping mission in North-East Greenland. Their journey formed part of Denmark's broader efforts to explore and document the Arctic region.
The memorial displays text from Brønlund's journal, keeping the final words of the expedition members alive for visitors. These personal writings offer a human perspective on a perilous Arctic journey.
The memorial sits along the Langelinie promenade and is easy to reach on foot from central Copenhagen. The waterfront path is flat and well-maintained, making it a straightforward walk to find the monument.
The granite for the memorial came from a 40-ton boulder recovered from the Flinterenden Channel underwater. Sculptor Kai Nielsen personally inspected the stone while wearing diving gear before work on the monument could begin.
