Karlstrup Mine, Former limestone quarry in Solrød Municipality, Denmark
Karlstrup Mine is a former limestone quarry in Solrød Municipality, Denmark, where a lake has formed inside the excavated pit, surrounded by steep limestone walls. The walls expose clear geological layers that built up over a very long period.
The limestone formed during the Cretaceous Period, when the sea covered this part of the world and left behind layers of marine life. The stone was later extracted for use in construction and as a soil treatment in farming.
The site is popular with divers because the water in the lake is unusually clear and the limestone walls are visible below the surface. Anglers also visit regularly, and in summer the paths around the area attract people out for a walk.
The site has two walking routes: a wider path close to the lake and a narrower one along the quarry walls. Both are good for watching birds and wildlife, especially in the quieter morning and evening hours.
The lake water is clear enough that from the shore you can see the limestone bottom several feet (a few meters) below, which makes it one of the few diving spots in this part of Denmark. The site sits close enough to Copenhagen to be an easy day trip.
