Karlstrup Mine, Former limestone quarry in Solrød Municipality, Denmark
Karlstrup Mine is a former limestone quarry in Solrød with a lake covering around 6 hectares and reaching depths of 14 meters, surrounded by steep limestone walls. The excavation reveals clear geological layers and formations spanning thousands of years of natural history.
The limestone formed during the Cretaceous Period millions of years ago when seas covered the region and left behind marine life. The quarry was later excavated to extract limestone for construction and agricultural purposes.
The site has transformed into a recreational destination where people come to dive, fish, and observe nature throughout the year. Its dramatic limestone setting creates an unexpected backdrop for leisure activities near Copenhagen.
Two distinct walking paths circle the site: a wider trail next to the lake and a narrower route along the quarry edge. Both routes offer different vantage points for viewing the landscape and observing wildlife.
The lake hosts a diverse bird population including coots, grebes, and herons, while surrounding slopes shelter toads, grass snakes, and lizards. These species benefit from the stable conditions the abandoned quarry provides.
