Copenhagen Contemporary, Art center in Copenhagen, Denmark
Copenhagen Contemporary is an international art center in the Refshaleøen neighborhood of Copenhagen, Denmark. It occupies a former welding hall with a large facade that has three vertical sections, a rusty metal grid with two red circular letters, and a glass entrance at street level.
Copenhagen Contemporary was founded in 2015 by art collector Jens Faurschou and businessman Jens Erik Sørensen. It opened on Papirøen in 2016 and moved to its current location on Refshaleøen in 2018.
The center is known for showing large-scale installations and video art that visitors can walk through and experience with their senses. It also hosts talks, concerts, and workshops, making it a meeting point for both art professionals and the general public.
The art center is located on Refshaleøen, a former industrial area that is now reachable by bus or bike from the city center. Once inside, the space is open and easy to navigate, with exhibitions spread across a large hall, so comfortable shoes are a good idea.
The building was once a welding hall for the Burmeister & Wain shipyard, and its industrial past is still visible in the rusty metal grid on the facade. The center has no permanent collection, so every visit offers a completely new set of exhibitions.
