Hegnsholt

Hegnsholt is a country house located between Fredensborg and Hillerød municipalities, with its main building designed by architect Christian Frederik Hansen in 1815. The structure was modified and expanded in subsequent decades while retaining core features of its original 19th century design and layout.

The property was purchased in 1812 by Adam Wilhelm Hauch, a high-ranking royal official, who commissioned the 1815 building design from Hansen. During the 20th century, portions of the land found new uses, including development into an airfield during the 1940s.

The estate displays traditional Danish building design from the early 1800s with architectural choices that reflect country living of that era. The rooms and grounds show how wealthy families arranged their homes and land in the countryside during this period.

The estate sits about 40 kilometers north of Copenhagen and is reachable from the nearby towns of Hillerød or Fredensborg. Local transport connections or a car work best for reaching the property, as direct public access options are limited.

Part of the grounds was transformed into an airfield in 1940 when aviation pioneer Christian Bohnsted-Petersen established a landing strip on the property. This unexpected shift from private estate to flight station reveals an interesting layer of local aviation history.
