Description
Hjøllund ammunitionsdepot is an ammunition storage facility with 121 bunkers spread across about 700 acres in a forested area. Narrow gravel roads connect the individual storage structures throughout the site.
History
German forces built this installation in 1942 to supply ammunition to the Luftwaffe airbase at Grove and maintained it until 1945. British forces took control once the war ended.
Culture
After World War II, Denmark repurposed this installation to temporarily house refugees before converting it to a prison for Danish military personnel in 1948. This transformation shows how military infrastructure took on different roles once the war ended.
Practical
The site remains a restricted military zone closed to public access, with security measures in place to protect the ammunition storage facilities. Visitors can only view the area from outside the perimeter.
