Arch of Caracalla, Roman triumphal arch in Tébessa, Algeria
The Arch of Caracalla features four monumental gates with Corinthian columns, reaching a height of 12.5 meters and a width of 11.6 meters.
Built between 211 and 214 AD through a donation of 250,000 sestertii from Gaius Cornelius Egrilianus, the arch commemorates Emperor Caracalla and his family.
Medallions on three sides display high relief busts depicting a lion, Minerva-Medusa, and the Fortune of Theveste wearing a turreted crown.
The monument stands at the northern entrance of Tébessa, maintaining its original structure despite centuries of regional conflicts and architectural modifications.
During the Byzantine period in 539 AD, the arch was integrated into the city wall system, with its lateral and northern passages temporarily sealed.
