Al Kaf

El Kef is an administrative region in northwestern Tunisia, covering mountainous terrain with valleys and settlements at higher elevations. The area comprises twelve municipalities connected by major roads and sits near the Algerian border.

The region served as a command center during the Algerian independence movement in the 1950s, when it played a key role in the resistance against colonial rule. It was an important location in the history of North African liberation struggles.

The region maintains strong connections with Algeria, hosting the second-largest Algerian community in Tunisia with over 6,000 registered voters from the neighboring country.

The region is best accessed by main roads that connect the various municipalities throughout the area. Visitors should be flexible and prepared for varying road conditions, especially in the mountainous sections.

The capital El Kef sits at about 780 meters elevation and is Tunisia's highest city, built on the slopes of Jebel Dyr mountain. This location gives the city a cooler climate and a distinctive character that sets it apart from other Tunisian towns.
