Seaplane Harbour, Maritime museum in Kalamaja, Estonia
Seaplane Harbour is a maritime museum in Tallinn, housed in a former military hangar on the edge of the old town, right at the water's edge. Inside, the building holds ships, a submarine, and aircraft across multiple levels, with exhibits covering the air, the sea, and the world below it.
The hangar was built in the early 20th century as part of a Russian imperial naval program and remained in military use for many decades. After the Soviet period ended, the building was renovated with European support and opened to the public as a museum.
The name of this museum comes from the seaplane operations that took place here in the early decades of the 20th century. Visitors today can stand next to original seaplanes and get a sense of how these aircraft once took off from the water just outside the hangar doors.
The museum sits within walking distance of Tallinn's old town, right on the waterfront, so it is easy to reach on foot. There are several levels to explore, so wear comfortable shoes and allow enough time to see everything without rushing.
One of the exhibits is a working submarine simulator where visitors can try diving maneuvers as if they were on board a real vessel. The museum also has tanks with live sea animals and a small pool where model ships can be sailed, which makes the visit more hands-on than a typical museum.
