Matsalu National Park, National park and Ramsar site in western Estonia

Matsalu National Park spreads across wetlands and coastal meadows in western Estonia, encompassing the expansive delta of the Kasari River. A network of bird observation towers dot the landscape, while the visitor center in Penijõe offers maps and information about exploring the area.

Protection of this natural area began in 1936 with early bird conservation efforts and led to its designation as a nature reserve in 1957. This progression reflected growing recognition that this coastal zone held importance for migratory bird populations across entire continents.

The Matsalu International Nature Film Festival takes place each autumn in Lihula, showcasing documentaries about environmental protection and natural heritage. Visitors from across the region gather to experience stories that celebrate the local environment.

Visit during warmer months or during spring and autumn migration periods when bird watching is most rewarding. Sturdy footwear and weatherproof clothing are recommended, as the terrain can be wet and muddy in places.

More than two million waterfowl pass through these wetlands during spring migration, with long-tailed ducks making up the largest group. This enormous gathering makes the location one of the most important stopover sites for migrating birds across northern Europe.
