Karula National Park, National park in Valga Rural Municipality, Estonia.
Karula National Park is a protected area in south Estonia defined by around 60 lakes scattered throughout the landscape. Forests dominate the terrain and shape the appearance of this relatively compact protected area.
The area received protected status in 1979 and became a national park in 1993. This made it the smallest such park in the country.
In the northern section, traditional Estonian farms sit among fields and pastures, showing how people have farmed this land for thousands of years. The way locals continue to work with the countryside reflects practices that remain rooted in the region.
A visitor center near Lake Ähijärv offers information about trails and facilities. It helps to check in advance for opening times and which routes are accessible given current conditions.
The park is one of only three places in Estonia where daisyleaf grape fern grows, a rare plant. This botanical feature makes the area noteworthy for nature enthusiasts and plant specialists.
