Nõmmeveski Waterfall, Waterfall in Nõmmeveski village, Kuusalu Municipality, Estonia
Nõmmeveski Waterfall is a water cascade in the Valgejõgi River canyon, flowing over limestone cliffs and creating white water rapids below. The drop spans approximately 6 meters within a deep gorge bounded by tall rock walls.
The waterfall was shaped during the last ice age when melting glaciers carved through the landscape and exposed layers of limestone and sandstone. This glacial process created the current gorge structure along the Baltic Klint formation.
The waterfall serves as a traditional gathering spot for local communities during seasonal celebrations, particularly around midsummer festivities. People come here to connect with the natural landscape and mark important times of the year.
The waterfall is accessible via marked trails in Lahemaa National Park, with parking available at the Nõmmeveski recreational area. The best time to visit is during or after rainfall when water flow is stronger.
Rare ferns and mosses thrive on the vertical limestone walls within the narrow gorge, creating a microclimate for specific plant species. This specialized habitat developed due to the constant moisture and filtered light inside the canyon.
