Puhtu-Laelatu Nature Reserve, Nature reserve in Lääneranna Rural Municipality, Estonia
Puhtu-Laelatu Nature Reserve is a large protected area on Estonia's western coast with shallow bays, coastal lakes, and varied habitats throughout its lowland terrain. Multiple islands and coastal strips combine to form a diverse mosaic of water, wetland, and forested areas.
Protection of this area started in 1939 when Adralaid and Puhtulaid islands were safeguarded. The larger nature reserve as it exists today was established in 2003, bringing together multiple protected zones.
The name comes from the islands and shallow waters that shape this coastal region. Visitors can observe how the landscape supports both local wildlife and seasonal movements of migratory species.
The site has observation points where visitors can watch birds during their migrations, especially in spring. Walking through the area and exploring its different habitats on foot helps you notice the variety of wildlife present.
A wooded meadow called Laelatu holds more than 400 plant species and a remarkable collection of orchids found nowhere else in the country in such numbers. This small area demonstrates the botanical richness hidden within coastal landscapes.
