The city was named after Canopus, a navigator who was part of Menelaus's expedition to Troy.
It was famous for its sanctuaries of Osiris and Serapis, attracting many pilgrims.
Today, it is an important archaeological site with numerous underwater discoveries.
The 'Canopic Jar' used for storing organs during mummification got its name from this city.
