Quermançó Castle

Quermançó is a medieval castle on a remote hill in Vilajuïga, with thick stone walls and a central tower overlooking the Empordà region. The remains show the original structure with different building phases visible across the surfaces.

The castle was first recorded in 1078 and served for centuries as an archive for the county of Empúries. In 1814, troops under Marshal Suchet destroyed much of it.

The castle shows Catalan building traditions using stone and techniques that were used across many centuries. This approach shapes how the structure looks and how it fits into the landscape today.

The ruins can be reached by a walking path from the N-260 road, though interior spaces are closed due to private ownership. Wear sturdy shoes since the terrain is uneven and paths are rough.

Artist Salvador Dalí proposed transforming the castle into a giant instrument played by regional winds. His surprising plan included other unconventional ideas for using the space.
