Basilica de Santa Maria

The Basilica de Santa Maria is a minor basilica featuring three naves with nine ogive vaults supported by pillars, incorporating rainbow arches and ribbed vaults that meet at keystones. The interior structure displays typical Gothic proportions and decorative elements that define the architectural style.

Construction of this structure began in 1261 under architect Ramón de Xartres, replacing an earlier Romanesque church from 1007 that had been consecrated in 1064. The replacement indicates that the site had already served as a place of worship for centuries before the Gothic structure was built.

The building is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and displays the craftsmanship of medieval artisans through its alabaster altarpiece and carved stone portal. These elements show how much care was invested in creating a place where the local community gathered to worship.

The basilica maintains seasonal hours, with extended access during summer months and reduced hours during other times of the year. Visitors should check current opening times before planning a visit, as the schedule varies significantly throughout the year.

The bell tower on the north side reaches 36 meters (118 feet) high and displays Lombard architectural characteristics across its five stories. This tower structure dates from the 12th century, making it older than the Gothic basilica that stands beside it.
