Urtx, Hamlet in Fontanals de Cerdanya, Spain
Urtx is a hamlet within the municipality of Fontanals de Cerdanya, in the Cerdanya region of Spain. It consists of old stone houses with wooden doors and shutters, set along narrow streets.
Urtx appears in records dating back to 1081 and was the center of a small noble territory known as the vescomtat d'Urtx during the Middle Ages. Over the following centuries the village changed hands several times, passing to the College of Priests in Puigcerdà in 1698.
The church of Sant Martí, built in the Romanesque style with rounded arches and thick stone walls, is the most visible landmark of the village. It still serves as a gathering place during local festivals and celebrations throughout the year.
The hamlet sits within the municipality of Fontanals de Cerdanya and is reached by local roads through the Cerdanya valley. A visit is possible at any time of year, though the warmer months make it easier to walk around the narrow streets.
Urtx has a local spring whose water has been sought out by residents and visitors for many generations. It is easy to find on a walk through the village and has long been part of everyday life here.
