Casco de Leiro

The Casco de Leiro is a Bronze Age gold helmet with a hemispherical shape and a diameter of approximately 19.5 centimeters. Its surface is decorated with six horizontal rows of concentric circles, created through crafting techniques such as casting and hammering.

A farmer discovered this object in 1976 while working near Leiro beach on Spain's northwestern coast. The find shows that Bronze Age craftsmanship and gold working were widespread in this region.

The helmet shows the artistic skill of ancient craftspeople who worked intricate patterns into the precious metal. Objects of such value were likely worn only during special occasions or ceremonies and held great social status.

This piece can be viewed at the Museo Arqueolóxico e Histórico in La Coruña, where it is displayed alongside other Bronze Age finds. The collection gives visitors insight into metalworking and daily life from that period.

Scholars still debate whether it served as a helmet, a ritual bowl, or a symbol of power because perforations and ornate details seem puzzling. The unusual construction suggests it may not have been intended solely for wearing.
