Dunas de Corrubedo and Lagoas de Carregal e Vixán Natural Park, Natural reserve with dunes and lagoons in Ribeira, Spain
Dunas de Corrubedo and Lagoas de Carregal e Vixán Natural Park is a protected coastal area featuring extensive dune formations and two large lagoons in Galicia. The landscape includes a moving dune as well as freshwater and brackish lagoons, crossed by various walking trails that reveal different habitats for birds and plants.
The protected area received its official designation as a natural park in 1992 to preserve the coastal landscapes and their ecosystems from change. This recognition was part of international efforts to safeguard wetlands with high biological diversity.
The visitor center highlights traditional fishing practices and explains how local communities have lived alongside these coastal ecosystems for generations. The displays show the importance of these landscapes to regional identity and sustainable use of marine resources.
The park has two main entrances at O Vilar and Olveira where visitors can access various marked walking trails. The paths are well-maintained and lead through different habitats, though ground conditions can be muddy or slippery depending on the season.
The two lagoons differ dramatically: one contains freshwater while the other is saltwater, an unusual combination in such close proximity. This arrangement creates two completely different ecosystems side by side and attracts a particularly varied birdlife.
