Leitza, municipality of Spain
Leitza is a town in Navarre nestled in a quiet valley surrounded by green hills, featuring stone houses and narrow winding streets. The center is defined by the Church of San Miguel, a sturdy stone structure that resembles a fortress, with historic buildings displaying arched entrances throughout the old quarter.
Leitza has been inhabited since at least the 12th century and received a charter of freedoms from King Sancho the Wise in 1192. As a border fortress between Navarre and Castile, it required a castle from 1318 onward, which was destroyed and rebuilt multiple times through regional conflicts and the Carlist Wars of the 19th century.
The town's identity is deeply rooted in its forests and pastoral traditions, which remain visible in how residents interact with the landscape. The main plaza serves as the gathering place for celebrations and community events, while pelota continues as a valued local sport played on the town's fronton.
Leitza is accessible by car in about 40 minutes from Donostia or Pamplona, with bus connections available to other towns. The town is easily explored on foot, with walking trails through the surrounding forests and a central plaza where the main historic buildings are located.
The town served as a filming location for the popular comedy 'Ocho Apellidos Vascos', with a large mural depicting an elderly woman with a colorful braid added at the town entrance in 2019. Several famous strength athletes, including stone-lifter Iñaki Perurena, come from here and developed their skills through local rural sports traditions.
