Basilica of Our Lady of the Pine Tree, Gothic church in Gothic Quarter, Spain

The Basilica of Our Lady of the Pine Tree is a Gothic church in the Gothic Quarter featuring tall pointed arches and detailed stonework typical of the period. The western facade is dominated by a large rose window, and the interior contains several chapels and side spaces.

Construction of the current Gothic structure began in 1319, with the bell tower completed between 1460 and 1497 under master builder Bartomeu Mas. This lengthy building phase reflects the growing importance of the parish and its ability to construct such a monumental work.

The basilica houses Els Gegants del Pi, traditional giant wooden figures from the 16th century that appear in Barcelona's festivals throughout the year. These figures play an important role in local processions and religious celebrations.

The church is located near La Rambla and offers daily visiting hours, though access to museum spaces typically requires a separate ticket. It helps to locate the entrance carefully, as the building sits nestled between narrow streets, so watch for signs on surrounding roads.

The church treasury contains rare metalwork pieces, including a Lignum Crucis relic from 1498 and an exceptional chalice decorated with enamels from earlier periods. These objects show the long tradition of veneration and the community's investment in religious art objects.
