Teatre Poliorama, Theatre and movie venue on Las Ramblas, Barcelona, Spain.
Teatre Poliorama is a theatre and cinema on Las Ramblas in Barcelona, housed in a late 19th-century building. The auditorium seats around 700 people and is arranged so that most seats offer a clear view of the stage.
The building was designed in 1899 by architect Josep Domènech i Estapà and originally served the Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts of Barcelona. After a major renovation, it reopened in 1982 as a theatre and cinema.
The venue hosts diverse performances and screenings that draw audiences throughout the year. Visitors can experience different forms of artistic expression here, from classical plays to contemporary works.
The theatre sits right on the Ramblas, so it is easy to reach on foot or by public transport from most parts of central Barcelona. Performances and screenings usually take place in the evenings, so checking the programme in advance is a good idea.
During the Spanish Civil War, the building was used as a sniper post, a detail recorded by writer George Orwell in his book Homage to Catalonia. Orwell himself spent time on the rooftop and described looking out over the Ramblas from above.
