Erillcastell

Erillcastell is an abandoned settlement with stone ruins scattered across a steep mountainside at approximately 1439 meters elevation. The remains of houses form a tight street pattern that reflects the medieval village's adaptation to the hillside terrain.

The settlement began in 1024 as a castle fortification and later became the center of the Erill barony under the counts of Pallars Jussà. During the medieval period, it developed into an important administrative seat in this mountain region.

The Church of Santa Maria de Erillcastell reflects the faith of medieval inhabitants and their ties to the Diocese of Lleida. This place served as a spiritual center for a mountain community rooted in religious tradition.

Access requires a four-wheel-drive vehicle since mountain roads from El Pont de Suert are narrow and challenging. Plan your visit during clear weather and good daylight, as conditions on steep terrain can be difficult.

A covered stone structure on the site is still used by local shepherds as shelter for livestock today. This functional space shows how certain parts of the abandoned settlement continue to serve their original purpose despite the village being deserted.
