Castell de Castellet, Medieval fortification in Castellet i la Gornal, Spain.
Castell de Castellet is a medieval castle in Castellet i la Gornal, in the province of Barcelona, combining Romanesque and Gothic construction phases. The site contains several structures enclosed by a perimeter wall, set on a hill above the Foix reservoir.
The first recorded fortification on this hill dates to the late 10th century, when a simple tower was built over earlier settlement remains. The complex grew over the following centuries, with Romanesque structures giving way to Gothic additions as different lords held the site.
The castle is now home to the Abertis Foundation, which uses parts of the building for its work while keeping the site open to visitors. Walking through it, you can see how the Romanesque and Gothic sections sit side by side, each built in a different period.
The entrance is on Carrer del Castell in the village of Castellet i la Gornal, and the walk up to the castle is short but steep. It is worth checking ahead whether the site is open on the day you plan to visit, as access can vary.
Every second weekend of June, the castle grounds host a medieval market with crafts and live performances, drawing visitors from across the region. Outside of this event, the site tends to be very quiet, which makes for a relaxed visit with few crowds.
