Zahara-El Gastor Reservoir, a reservoir in Spain
Zahara-El Gastor Reservoir is a large body of water in Cadiz Province, surrounded by gentle hills and woodlands and stretching below the white village of Zahara de la Sierra. The water is lined with trees and reflects the surrounding landscape, while paths provide access to the shoreline.
The reservoir was built in recent decades to secure the water supply for the region and support agriculture. This structure changed the landscape and is now an established part of the land and daily life of local people.
The reservoir takes its name from two nearby towns and shapes the region's identity as a place between water and mountains. Locals and visitors use it daily for fishing, picnicking, and sitting by the shore, creating a rhythm of quiet outdoor life.
You can reach the lake from a parking area below the village and walk along the shoreline or kayak when the season allows. The area also has picnic spots and an artificial beach with lifeguards during hot months.
An old olive mill from 1755 called Molino El Vinculo operates outside the village with its original machinery still functioning. The mill also runs a small rural hotel where visitors can watch olive oil being made and stay overnight.
