Castell d'Almenara

Castell d'Almenara is a medieval fortress sitting atop a hill with two distinctive towers named L'Agüelet and L'Agüeleta that overlook the surrounding landscape. The structure spans across the hillside and contains remains of different sections including areas that once held religious spaces.

The fortress was built by Moors in the 10th century on top of earlier Roman structures, layering different periods into one location. One tower underwent reconstruction in the 19th century and was later adapted for long-distance communication purposes.

The fortress holds protected status as cultural property and reflects the Moorish building traditions of the Valencia region. Visitors can observe how the structure combines architectural elements that shaped the area's heritage.

A marked walking trail of approximately 4 kilometers begins at the intersection of Calle Castellón and Calle Moncofa and leads up to the fortress and back. Sturdy footwear is recommended since the path crosses uneven terrain and climbs toward the hilltop.

One of the towers was adapted in the 19th century to serve as a communication relay point using mirror signals for the railway system connecting to Sagunto. This repurposing shows how medieval structures were transformed to support new technologies of that era.
