Araya

Araya is a mountain village in Tenerife at an elevation of about 800 meters on the foothills of Ladera de Chafa, overlooking the Güímar Valley to the northeast. The settlement spreads across gentle slopes with traditional houses and open views toward the surrounding landscape.

The settlement was documented in 1737 by Bishop Pedro Dávila, who recorded 45 households and identified it as a community focused on wine production for spirits. This early record shows how the local economy centered on agricultural output for trade.

The village celebrates its patron saints with festivals for San Juan Bautista in June and Santa Rita in October, featuring religious ceremonies and local gatherings. These events shape community life and show how traditions remain central to daily rhythms here.

The village connects to surrounding areas via the TF-247 road, and TITSA bus line 123 provides regular service from Santa Cruz through Las Caletillas and Candelaria. You can walk easily through the settlement to explore scattered houses and the nearby terrain at your own pace.

Two marked hiking trails, SL-TF 294 Los Brezos and SL-TF 296 La Mesa, start from the San Juan Bautista Church and lead to mountain viewpoints. These routes offer visitors a chance to explore the surroundings on established paths.
