Ancient Roman forum district, Cartagena

The Ancient Roman Forum District in Molinete contains ruins of temples, thermal baths, and administrative buildings from the Roman port city of Carthago Nova. The excavations reveal how a Roman city was organized with distinct areas for religious, leisure, and government functions.

Roman general Publius Cornelius Scipio captured this Mediterranean port in 209 BC and developed it into a major trading center with extensive urban construction. The city flourished as an important hub for commerce and military activities.

The Sanctuary of Isis reveals how residents honored gods through daily rituals and ceremonies at altars and shrines built into the rock. Visitors can see the spaces where people left offerings and gathered for religious observances.

The site spans multiple levels cut into a hillside with stairs and slopes, making it physically demanding in places. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water, as there is limited shade throughout the excavated areas.

The Colonial Forum features an ornately decorated Curia building where senators met and organized civic gatherings, with carved details still visible on walls and doorways. The craftsmanship shows the importance this community placed on formal government spaces.
