Atlantic Botanical Garden, Botanical garden in Gijón, Spain.
Atlantic Botanical Garden is a garden in Gijón covering approximately 16 hectares with plant species from northern Spain and the Atlantic coastal regions. The site consists of different sections, including an island grove with historical plant collections and additional gardens organized by geographic origin.
The garden opened in 2003 as the first botanical facility in northeast Spain, created from a desire to protect plants from the Atlantic coast. Since then, it has become a place for research and conservation of coastal flora.
The garden displays plants that have grown in the region for generations and shows how people have shaped the coastal landscape. Visitors encounter traditional varieties and arrangements that reflect the bond between local communities and their natural surroundings.
The entrance is located on Avenida del Jardín Botánico and can be reached on foot or by car. A visit takes several hours, especially if you want to explore the different sections at a relaxed pace.
A separate section holds a small collection of poisonous plants such as datura and monkshood, revealing Europe's darker botanical history. These plants were historically used as remedies and serve today as a cautionary example of nature's power.
