Necrópolis de Los Villares

The Necropolis of Los Villares is an ancient burial ground near Hoya-Gonzalo containing graves from several centuries. The site holds different types of burial structures, from simple pit graves to larger tombs designed for high-ranking individuals.

This burial ground was in use from the late 6th century through the early 4th century BCE. This period marks an important phase in Iberian history when this type of settlement remained an active center for the region.

The tombs display burial practices that reflected the social rank of the deceased through their construction methods. Simple graves sit alongside elaborate monuments, showing how the community honored its most important members.

The site is located some kilometers from Hoya-Gonzalo in open terrain that is accessible on foot. Sturdy footwear is recommended, and visiting during clear weather helps you see the burial structures more clearly.

The site revealed the largest Iberian sculpture ever found, a life-sized horseman statue from around the 5th century BCE. This remarkable work demonstrates the sophisticated artistic abilities of this ancient culture.
