Castell de Granera, Medieval castle in Granera, Spain
Castell de Granera is a castle set on a rocky outcrop in Barcelona province, built to follow the shape of the stone beneath it. The structure displays Romanesque features with walls made of regular stone blocks and mortar joints that form part of the landscape.
The castle first appeared in records in 971 as Castrum de Granito under the rule of the County of Manresa. It was later offered to Berenguer Ramón I, becoming part of the region's shifting power structures during the early medieval period.
The structure incorporates Romanesque architectural elements, with walls constructed of regular blocks joined with lime mortar and fragments displaying opus spicatum work.
The ruins can be reached via Barri del Castell along the BV-1245 road, with local tourism information available in the area. It is best to check current conditions before visiting, as the location sits on exposed terrain.
During the 1970s, an attempt was made to convert the castle into a guest inn, a plan that ultimately failed but left restoration work on the northern section. This unsuccessful transformation shows how the ruin was eventually returned to its natural state.
