Basílica de Santa Maria de Vilafranca del Penedès, Gothic basilica in Vilafranca del Penedès, Spain.
The Basilica of Santa Maria is a Gothic church in Vilafranca del Penedès built with a broad central nave divided into five cross-vaulted sections. Five lateral chapels line each side of the nave, positioned between the buttresses that support the walls.
Construction of this church began in the 13th century, marking the first example of Gothic architecture in Catalonia. The building replaced an earlier Romanesque chapel that previously stood on this site.
The basilica holds regular religious services and ceremonies for the local community while maintaining its status as a Cultural Asset of National Interest.
The main entrance features a neogothic door facing Plaça Jaume I, while a secondary entrance is located on Santa Maria Street. Both access points give visitors flexibility in how they enter the building.
An octagonal bell tower stands independently from the main church building, rising to approximately 52 meters. This separate tower is divided into two distinct architectural sections.
