El Carbayón, Historic oak tree in Oviedo, Spain.
El Carbayón is a large oak tree with distinctive cork-like bark located near Teatro Campoamor in central Oviedo. The tree provides a natural focal point in the city center and can be spotted easily while exploring the surrounding streets.
The original El Carbayón was removed in 1879 to make room for Calle Uria following a contested city council vote. The current tree was replanted later to honor the legacy of its predecessor.
Oviedo residents call themselves 'carbayones' after this tree, a name that reflects how deeply the oak shaped the city's identity and pride.
The tree is easy to reach in a busy area with marked pathways and serves as a natural landmark for navigation. You can walk around the surrounding zone without difficulty and spot the tree from nearby streets.
A local pastry called carbayón was created to honor the tree and features almonds, cognac, and cinnamon syrup. This sweet treat originated at Camilo de Blas bakery and remains a popular souvenir from Oviedo.
