Castillo de Moclín

Castillo de Moclín, Medieval fortress in Moclín, Spain

Castillo de Moclín is a medieval fortress located on a hilltop in Granada province and surrounded by defensive walls that follow the rocky terrain. The site contains several towers, including one that stands prominently in the northeastern section with views across the surrounding valleys and villages.

The fortress was built in the 13th century under the Arabic name Hins Al-Muqlin to defend the border between the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada and the Kingdom of Castile. Over time, control of the site changed hands as political powers in the region shifted and conflicts evolved.

The name comes from the Arabic 'Hins Al-Muqlin' and visitors can still see how the fortress was built to control movement between rival kingdoms. The stone towers and walls reveal the strategic thinking of those who constructed this place to defend their territory.

The site is best visited on dry days since steep stairs and stone surfaces can become slippery in wet conditions. Sturdy footwear and enough time to explore the different sections of the complex are recommended to see everything thoroughly.

A large water cistern in the upper section of the fortress was essential during long sieges, showing how carefully defenders had to plan for survival. This system allowed inhabitants to withstand extended isolation without outside supply.
