Santa Maria de Cadaqués

Santa Maria de Cadaqués is a Gothic church with a single nave, lateral chapels, and a polygonal tower, with brilliant white walls facing the Mediterranean Sea. Inside, it displays gilded wood altars featuring religious artwork from different periods.

A raid by Saracen pirates in the 16th century destroyed the original structure, after which the church was rebuilt incorporating Gothic elements. This reconstruction shaped the appearance visitors see today.

The main altar displays maritime motifs that reflect this place's deep connection to fishing and the sea. These details speak to the people who prayed here and dedicated their lives to the ocean.

The site sits at the highest point of Cadaqués and is reached by steep, narrow streets that require a challenging climb. Visitors should take their time and wear comfortable shoes, as the approach is demanding.

Nine smaller gilded wood altars stand beside the main altar, together forming a rare collection of religious artistry. This multiple arrangement developed because different families supported the building and beautifying of the place over centuries.
