Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de Muskilda, Romanesque hermitage church at Mount Muskilda, Ochagavía, Spain

The Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de Muskilda is a Romanesque chapel located on a mountain in Ochagavía, distinguished by its clear geometric form and simple stone construction. The interior is framed by six cylindrical columns that support a vault system, while outbuildings for residents stand within the surrounding stone walls.

The chapel began construction around 1200 during the height of Romanesque building in the region, displaying characteristic features of that era. The structure underwent modifications and additions over time, reflecting different building phases in its development.

The hermitage draws pilgrims and believers who venerate the wooden statue of Mary housed within its walls. Local residents gather at this sacred site for religious processions and celebrations that connect them to their faith and traditions.

The site is reachable by hiking trails and sits at a mountain elevation that requires sturdy footwear. The exposed surroundings offer little shelter, so preparation for changing weather conditions is essential.

Inside stands a carved and painted wooden image of Mary holding the Christ Child, created during the late medieval period. This artwork reveals the artistic tradition that has endured at this location for generations.
