Santa Maria del Collell, Religious complex in Sant Ferriol, Spain
The stone structure includes both Romanesque and late Gothic architectural elements, featuring a central nave with pointed barrel vaulting and columns with decorated capitals.
Founded in 780 by Baron of Cartella, Santa Maria del Collell expanded in the 16th century with the addition of a Gothic nave on the northern side.
The sanctuary holds significance as a pilgrimage destination since 1198, when it operated under the monastery of Sant Pere de Besalu.
Located 13 kilometers from Banyoles, 5 from Mieres, and 20 from Olot, the site maintains regular religious services within the Diocese of Girona.
The complex served multiple purposes throughout history, including operating as a prison and educational facility for underprivileged youth starting in 1852.
