Palacio San Joseren

Palacio San Joseren, Heritage palace in Areeta, Spain

Palacio San Joseren is an eclectic residence in Getxo with four facades and characteristic projections that create a staircase-like pattern on its main front. The structure contains multiple levels, including a basement, ground floor, upper stories, and attic, with windows organized in six clear axes across its exterior.

The palace was designed in 1914 by architect José Luis Oriol Uriguen, who combined elements of Basque regionalism with eclectic design principles. The building emerged during a period when affluent families in the region commissioned homes that blended local and contemporary styles.

The palace reflects how prosperous families in Getxo displayed their status through architectural choices during the early 20th century. Its design merges local traditions with contemporary ideas, showing the aspirations of a growing Basque society.

The building sits along Zugazarte street and is easily recognizable from the exterior due to its distinctive form with multiple levels and varied window arrangements. Visitors should walk around the structure to fully appreciate the architectural details from different viewpoints.

A remarkable balustraded terrace extends from the left side of the building, showcasing fine craftsmanship typical of affluent residences from that era. On the right side, a polygonal tower rises prominently, giving the palace its distinctive asymmetrical appearance.
