Armintxe Cave

Armintxe Cave, Paleolithic rock art cave in Lekeitio, Spain.

Armintxe is a cave containing Paleolithic rock engravings beneath residential buildings in Lekeitio. The artworks display detailed depictions of horses, bisons, ibex, and rare lion representations that reach up to 1.5 meters (5 feet) in size.

The cave was rediscovered in 2016 by eight speleologists from ADES Espeleologia Elkartea after remaining hidden for a long time. The engravings date to the Magdalenian culture approximately 12,000 to 14,500 years ago.

The engraving methods used here match those found in French Pyrenean caves, suggesting that ancient peoples shared similar artistic traditions across the region. This connection reveals how prehistoric communities were linked through shared cultural practices.

The cave is closed to regular visitors as it lies beneath residential buildings and requires special permissions for access. Contact local authorities or research institutions if you are interested in learning about research visit opportunities.

Groundwater continuously flows through the cave system, posing natural challenges to preserving the ancient engravings over time. This underground moisture environment is further complicated by nearby urban development, requiring ongoing conservation efforts.
