Pont Nelson Mandela, Arch bridge in El Prat de Llobregat, Spain.
Pont Nelson Mandela is a concrete arch bridge that crosses the Llobregat River using two inclined arches and an inverted tripod pier system. The structure extends roughly 300 meters to link urban and industrial zones.
Construction began in 2009 and was completed in 2015 as part of a larger infrastructure project to improve connections to Barcelona Port and the airport. The project arose from the need to handle the region's growing logistical and transport demands.
The bridge was named in 2016 after Nelson Mandela to honor his fight for freedom and human rights. This choice reflects the values the city wanted to express through its modern infrastructure.
The roadway is about 29 meters wide and offers separate zones for cars, bicycles, and pedestrians. Access is available from both sides and the route connects city areas directly with port zones.
With its main span of about 150 meters, this bridge ranks among the longest of its kind in Catalonia. The innovative design with inclined arches was specifically developed to handle the wide river crossing while keeping the passage clear for boat traffic.
