Mequinenza Dam, Gravity dam and hydroelectric station in Mequinenza, Spain.
Mequinenza Dam is a concrete gravity structure that spans across the Ebro River with six spillway gates for water control. The facility operates four Francis turbines to generate electricity.
Construction started in 1955 under ENHER supervision and operations began in 1964 following major engineering work. The turbines underwent renovation between 2007 and 2010 to improve efficiency.
The dam's creation displaced the original town, now documented through museums that preserve stories of local mining traditions. Visitors can see how the community adapted to this transformation.
The site is accessible year-round, though water levels change seasonally and affect how the surrounding landscape appears. Comfortable shoes are recommended as exploration around the structure is done on foot.
The reservoir behind it extends far across the landscape, forming a freshwater lake that also serves as a recreation area. This water body is one of the larger reserves in the region and shifts noticeably with the seasons.
