Ponte Sampaio Bridge

The 144-meter-long bridge spans across the Verdugo River with ten pointed arches and substantial stone reinforcements between each arch section.

Built in the 11th century, the bridge became a strategic point during the Battle of Puente Sampayo against French forces in June 1809.

The structure forms an integral section of the Portuguese Way pilgrimage route, leading thousands of travelers annually toward Santiago de Compostela.

Visitors can reach the bridge via the PO-264 road, which connects the municipalities of Pontevedra and Soutomaior through this historic crossing.

The Plaza de España in Pontevedra features a monument depicting one of the bridge pillars where significant combat occurred during the 1809 battle.
