Viaduto de Madrid, Redondela, Railway viaduct in Redondela, Spain.
The Viaduto de Madrid is a railway bridge in Redondela spanning 149 meters with a combination of stone and metal sections. It has ten masonry arches and three central iron frameworks, rising up to 26.5 meters high.
The bridge opened in 1884, designed by engineer Mariano Carderera Ponzán to connect two major cities by rail. It became a vital link in Galicia's transportation network between Vigo and Tuy.
The structure shows how late 1800s engineers combined metal and stone to create lasting structures. You can see this blend of materials in industrial design from that era.
The bridge underwent major restoration work from 2017 to 2019 with structural reinforcement and a fresh dark green paint finish. You can view it from several points around town, with good vantage points near the waterfront.
The bridge was designed with a wider structure than many comparable viaducts from its era to handle heavier rail traffic between the two cities. This generous 5-meter width allowed for faster and more reliable train crossings.
