Sidama Region

Sidama Region is an autonomous area in south-central Ethiopia with diverse terrain featuring mountains, plateaus, and valleys. The land includes agricultural areas and settlements spread across different elevation zones.

The region gained autonomy in 2020 following a referendum the previous year that received overwhelming local support. This change marked a major shift in the country's administrative structure.

The Fichchee celebration marks the Sidama New Year following a lunar calendar and brings communities together through traditional ceremonies. These annual festivities reveal how deeply rooted local customs are in the rhythm of daily life here.

The region is accessible via a major highway connecting it to other important Ethiopian cities. A nearby airport provides flight connections for those arriving by air.
