Pohjola Insurance building
Pohjola Insurance building, Office building in Kluuvi, Helsinki, Finland
The stone office building at 44 Aleksanterinkatu displays carved animals, mythological creatures, and natural elements across its granite and soapstone facade.
The architectural firm Gesellius, Lindgren & Saarinen designed this headquarters for Pohjola Insurance Company, completing construction between 1899 and 1901.
The structure incorporates elements from Finnish mythology, including references to Pohjola, a mythical northern land mentioned in the Kalevala epic.
The building contains office spaces with protected interiors, featuring red pine paneling, iron wheel chandeliers, and a circular stairway with cast-iron banisters.
Bears, squirrels, and trolls carved throughout the building reflect Finnish folklore, while a pinecone-shaped tower tops the structure.
