Kirjatalo

Kirjatalo is a modernist commercial building in central Helsinki with a copper-clad exterior and a central atrium design. Geometric skylights direct natural light downward through the interior, while the Academic Bookstore occupies multiple floors with its collection.

In 1961, the retailer Stockmann launched an architectural competition which the renowned architect Alvar Aalto won. The building was completed by 1969 based on his design, becoming an important example of modernist architecture in the city.

The Academic Bookstore within this building is a social meeting place where visitors browse through extensive collections of publications. People gather across multiple floors to explore books in different languages and subjects, making it a center for literary culture in the city.

The building is centrally located and easy to navigate through its multiple connected floors. Natural light from above creates a bright shopping environment, making it pleasant to spend time browsing regardless of weather outside.

The interior features Carrara marble flooring and railings that surround the central hall. This refined material choice creates a contrast with the building's modernist design.
